Article:  SHE DRINKS, HE SCORES
What Every Guy Needs to Know

             by Sarah Preston

PlayBoy.com ArticleWhen it comes to boozing, girls can be as picky about their poison as guys. Men cannot assume that every woman is as easy as an apple martini. You have to put a little thought into what you stock your home bar with before having a babe over -- especially if you're looking to score brownie points in the bedroom later. Two people who have given that a lot of thought are Jackie and Ray Foley, the editor and founder, respectively, of Bartender magazine. Jackie's recently published first book, The Pink Drink Book, tackles traditional chick drinks from a woman's perspective, offering tips on everything from fruit garnishes to glassware and more than 1,100 recipes.

"My cocktail recipes all have a flair toward women -- keeping it simple with the froufrou girlie drinks, which I enjoy," Jackie says. One of her favorite drinks from the book is the rasmopolitan. "It's an updated version of a cosmopolitan, made with Vox raspberry, which is a really nice new brand out."

But let's be honest. If a guy wants to both impress and intoxicate, Jackie suggests the femme fatale. "It's a Hennessy with cranberry juice topped with champagne -- I love the name and I love the recipe. Some guys might not want to do Vox raspberry, but Hennessy -- that's a cognac, more of a guy thing."

Playboy.com recently sat down for a spirited conversation with the Foleys about what every guy should know about using liquor to loosen a woman up.

YOU ONLY NEED ONE TYPE OF GLASS

"There's only one glass a man needs: a red wine balloon glass," Jackie advises. "It's an all-purpose glass. You can use it for champagne, you can serve drinks on the rocks, you can serve mixed drinks in it." The Foleys also say you can use the red wine balloon glass for beer -- just remember to keep it frosted in the freezer.

KEEP A BOTTLE CHILLED

The Foleys strongly suggest having a decent bottle of champagne and white wine in your fridge at all times. "I love Veuve Clicquot -- it's a wonderful champagne," says Jackie. "For white wine, try something inexpensive -- I would go with Chateau Ste Michelle from Washington State, which is a little different," Ray adds. And don't forget to chill it. It's important the white wine and champagne are kept cold because you never know when opportunity will knock.

THINK WHITE

Ray's number-one rule for home bartending: "Keep a white bar -- vodka, gin, tequila and rum. Those are your four basics." He adds that guys adventurous enough to take it a step further should keep scotch on hand, something like Dewar's, or a bottle of Irish whiskey. If men want to go with something trendy, the Foleys suggest Hypnotiq, a new cognac-based liqueur, which will impress the girls with its slick bottle and sweet taste. It can be served alone on the rocks.

MIX IT UP

"The most important mixers are club soda, Coke, ginger ale and tonic water," says Ray. "Men should also keep a bottle of O.J. and cranberry juice in the fridge or some cans in the freezer." If you didn't have the forethought to ask her what she likes ahead of time -- or if this is an impromptu nightcap -- these mixers will prepare you for almost anything.

DRESS UP YOUR DRINK

"Buy a small bottle of maraschino cherries; they'll last forever and girls love that special touch," Jackie says. "You can also use the juice like it's grenadine -- anything you wanna make pink or sweeter, add the cherry juice."

NOT ALL GIRLS DIG FROUFROU DRINKS

Plenty of chicks drink beer, Jackie says, and many of them are quaffing down a new brew called Michelob Ultra Light. "It's a low-carb beer," Jackie explains. So if they subscribe to the Zone or Atkins diets, they'll appreciate the gesture and may even have more than one. But keep this beer rule in mind: "Never serve canned beer to a woman -- always bottled," Jackie cautions. If you bring a girl home and she wants her beer in a can, you may want to think about canning her.

KEEP VANILLA ICE CREAM IN THE FREEZER

"When you go to a guy's house, the milk is almost always bad," says Ray. "So for making cream drinks or coffee, keep a pint of vanilla ice cream in your freezer so you'll always have fresh milk." Use the ice cream when making mudslides or white Russians. Those are delicious after-dinner drinks, and the vanilla ice cream shows a woman you have some creativity.

WOMEN LOVE STRAWBERRIES

"Are you ready for this drink?" Ray asks. "This is the knockout; this is the sneak one: champagne, vodka, with a strawberry -- it's called the French 75. You'll never taste the vodka over the champagne." Use four ounces of champagne, one ounce of vodka, put the vodka at the bottom and top with champagne. Don't call us in the morning.
